The Brazilian mining company, Vale, which is present in over 38 countries and is considered one of the biggest mining corporations in the world, is one of the six finalists in the fight for the title of worst company in the world. The Public Eye Award is chosen by the public and given out during the World Economic Forum Annual meeting in Davos. It’s the first time the company is nominated.
Vale was nominated by the International Network of People Affected by Vale, through the Brazilian organization, Rede Justiça nos Trilhos, which is located in Maranhão, in partnership with international NGOs such as Amazon Watch and International Rivers. The reasons which resulted in Vale’s nomination were the numerous environmental impacts, social impacts and work related issues that the company’s has caused in the country and in the world.
The company’s collaboration with the Consórcio Norte Energia SA, which is responsible for the construction the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant on the Xingu River, in the state of Pará, was considered by the organizers of the award, Greenpeace Switzerland and the Bern Declaration, the determining factor in the company’s inclusion in the list of nominees.
Vale owns 9% of the consortium, which would be responsible for the mandatory relocation of 40.000 people, affecting directly and indirectly more than 14 indigenous communities in the Xingu area.
