The Ministry of Communications is trying to include smartphones on the list of devices benefited by the “Lei do Bem”. The proposal, if passed, will reduce the cost of phones, through tax exemptions, in up to 25%.
The minimum retail price would go down to R$150, which would make smartphones more affordable for the lower class.
According to the Ministry, there are currently 236 million active mobile devices, but only 36 million have internet access. The government is in talks with cellphone companies to discuss job expansion plans, in order to be able to meet market demand.
